God’s Wonder and Splendor

God’s Wonder and Splendor

Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, Lord, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all. 1 Chronicles 29:11

Devotion

What comes to mind when you think of “God as Creator”? Does it include the idea of splendor and unexpected wonder?

Recently, I was able to go on vacation with two of my grandchildren, Brogan (9) and Judson (6). Not only was this their first vacation to Disney World, it was also their first time to fly on an airplane. Boarding the plane and leading up to takeoff, their eyes were so intent on the emergency procedures the stewardess was demonstrating on our plane! They both pulled out the safety brochure from the back of the seat in front of them and followed along … mesmerized. The unexpected wonder in their eyes during takeoff was amazing! This Grammy teared up as the pilot declared we were ready for takeoff and the plane revved up. We started taxiing forward and then experienced that thrilling feeling of lifting and flying in the air. As we rose above the clouds Brogan was glued to the window, a big grin on his face as he said, “this is insane!”

Oh, the firsts … the first time we saw the birth of our children, or witnessed a miraculous healing of someone we prayed faithfully for, or went traveling to a beautiful, anticipated destination-the view for the first time—I marvel at God’s wonder. I pray for those miracles, those unexpected wonders everyday in my life and even try to remind myself how things like a big metal airplane, so heavy, can actually fly like a bird. That day with Brogan and Judson was a great reminder of just how marvelous God created everything … the splendor of the clouds and sky, the mountains, all God’s creatures, and the inventions created, all inspired by our God.

In Exodus 15:11, Moses and the Israelites sing, "Who among the gods is like you, O Lord? Who is like you—majestic in holiness, revered with praises, performing wonders?" This song of praise acknowledges God's unparalleled power and the splendor of his miraculous deeds. All God’s people can sing this song of praise.

We often get caught up in all that’s going wrong in the world, caught up in the negativity and chaos. Let’s turn our attention back to the marvel and splendor of our God and trust in him. Everyday is a new day, a day of wonder, a day to be so grateful for all God has created for us and in us. Remember to make each day a first, give it to God, take it all in, observe, be grateful and be in awe … God is so good!

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, as we pause, let us center ourselves in you … your greatness, your power and splendor. Thank you for being our creator and for helping us to stop and observe all you have created around us. We are truly grateful. Yours, Lord, is the greatness, the power and the glory … oh, the splendor of it all! Amen
