I am the way the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6
Not too long ago at a family gathering, a small group of us were gathered for breakfast and chatting about life. In my family, religion is a topic that tends to come up often and we don’t all share the same view. Someone at the table said, “I don’t mind your Jesus. I like a lot of what he says. I am about 9/10ths pro-Jesus. Why is that not enough?”
Why is that not enough?
Jesus did not say the greatest commandment is to love the Lord your God with 90% of your heart, soul, mind, and strength. When asked “what is the greatest commandment?,” he answered the scribe by quoting a passage the audience all knew, “The most important is, ‘Hear O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’”
He wants all of you—not just 90% of your belief.
For some, that 10% may be that they don’t want to believe Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the only way to the Father. For others, the 10% is less obvious. Perhaps you are holding on to a hurt and don’t want to forgive as Christ forgave you. Perhaps that 10% is not loving your neighbor as yourself. Perhaps your 10% is like the rich young ruler.
Christ does not just want part of you. He wants a close, intimate relationship with you. He already knows what we think we are hiding. He knows our motives. He knows our failures, and yet he is 10/10ths—100%—pro-you.
Are you 100% pro-Jesus?
Jesus, thank you for loving me. Thank you for coming to this Earth to be 100% man and 100% God to take the punishment for sin that I deserve. Holy Spirit, reveal to me anything I am holding back from you. Draw me close to you. Amen
