In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus Christ speaks words that are both simple and deeply challenging. At first glance, this verse sounds like encouragement to simply be a good person. But Jesus is describing something much deeper: the visible evidence of a transformed life.
Light Is Meant to Be Seen Light has a purpose. No one turns on a lamp and hides it under a bowl. Light exists to illuminate darkness. In the same way, followers of Christ are not called to live hidden, private faiths that never influence the world around them. The light of Christ within us is meant to be visible. This doesn’t mean drawing attention to ourselves. In fact, Jesus makes it clear that the goal is not personal recognition but divine reflection. The purpose of our shining is so that others will glorify God, not us. When people see patience in a stressful moment, kindness toward someone difficult, or generosity when it costs something, they are catching a glimpse of God’s character through his people.
Your Ordinary Life Is the Lamp Often, we imagine “shining our light” as doing something big: leading a movement, speaking to crowds, or accomplishing something extraordinary. But Jesus connects light with good deeds, which often appear in ordinary moments. Your light shines when you: speak encouragement to someone who feels unseen; show compassion when others choose criticism; forgive when it would be easier to hold resentment; serve quietly without needing recognition. These small acts may seem insignificant, but God uses them to illuminate his love.
The Source of the Light It is important to remember that the light isn’t something we manufacture. Just as the moon reflects the sun, believers reflect Christ. When we stay connected to him through prayer, Scripture, and obedience, his character naturally shines through us. If we try to produce the light ourselves, we eventually burn out. But when we walk closely with God, our lives begin to glow with his presence.
A World That Needs Light Our world is full of darkness—discouragement, division, fear, and loneliness. Because of that, even the smallest light can be powerful. A single candle can transform a dark room. You may feel like your influence is small, but God never wastes a faithful life. Someone is watching how you live. Someone is being encouraged by your faithfulness. Someone may come to know God because they saw his light in you.
Lord, help me remember that my life is meant to reflect your light. In my words, actions, and attitudes, let people see your goodness. Give me courage to live visibly for you, not for attention, but so others may glorify you. Shine through my ordinary moments today. Amen.
