Endurance in Faith: Finding Joy in Trials

Endurance in Faith: Finding Joy in Trials

In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. John 16:33

Devotion

As I sit down to write this devotion, I feel a profound sense of joy and vulnerability wash over me. When you first get married you step into a world filled with hope and dreams, not quite knowing what life has in store for you. It’s like standing on the edge of a beautiful adventure, hand-in-hand with the person you love, ready to face whatever comes your way. My incredible wife, Brooke, and I celebrated our 17-year anniversary in February. Together, we are raising our two amazing daughters, who are now 9 and 12.

Along the way, we’ve experienced so much joy—meeting new friends, living in different states, and pursuing fulfilling jobs that feel more like callings than careers. But it hasn’t all been smooth sailing. We've faced trials that have truly tested our endurance, faith, and resilience. We lost my dad to pancreatic cancer, a heartbreaking moment that still weighs heavy in our hearts. And for the past two years, Brooke has shown incredible bravery as she battled breast cancer. Just this past February, we celebrated the conclusion of her last treatment, a moment filled with relief and joy that we’ll cherish forever.

In moments like these, it’s easy to question God and wonder why we face such hardships. Yet, it is precisely during these trials that I’ve learned to lean into my faith, trusting God even when things don’t make sense. Through all the ups and downs, one truth has resonated deeply with us: God is good, even when life is not. Jesus reminded us in John 16:33, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” These words resonate deeply as we navigate the ups and downs of life.

Here are a few lessons I’ve gathered along this journey that I hope will encourage you, too.

1. The pain and God’s promise can coexist.

It’s essential to recognize that pain and promise are not mutually exclusive. Just as the sun shines brightest after a storm, our faith is often strengthened through struggles. God’s promises are not diminished by our trials; in fact, they can become more vivid. Romans 5:3-5 teaches us that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. This hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts.

2. Find joy in all circumstances.

James 1:2-4 encourages us to “consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds.” Finding joy in hardship is a challenge, but it is also a profound act of faith. It reminds us that we are not defined by our circumstances but by our identity in Christ. Each moment of struggle is an opportunity for God to refine us and draw us closer to him.

3. There is power in community.

During our journey, we have witnessed firsthand the incredible power of community. Our church family has rallied around us in ways both big and small. From meals dropped off at our doorstep to heartfelt texts of encouragement, the love and support we’ve received have been immeasurable. This experience has underscored the importance of biblical community. We are called to bear one another’s burdens and to uplift each other in times of need.

4. Your presence is ministry.

Sometimes, the greatest gift we can offer to someone in pain is simply our presence. Showing up—whether it’s a visit, a text, or a phone call—can mean everything to someone facing a trial. I’ve been reminded of the isolation many feel, especially during times of illness. The church can be a beacon of hope in a world that often feels lonely and overwhelming. Let us strive to be that voice of hope for one another.

As I reflect on this journey, I am filled with gratitude to God for the lessons we have learned and the strength gained from the journey. Brooke’s resilience and unwavering hope in Jesus inspire me daily. We have faced challenges, but we have also experienced the overwhelming love of Christ through our family, friends, and church community.

So friends, let us continue to lean into our faith, enduring through trials, and finding joy and peace in the promises of God. May we remember that our struggles are not in vain, for they shape us and draw us closer to him. Let us continue to be a church that embodies the love of Christ, supporting one another through life’s storms.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank you for being our constant hope through every season of joy and trial. Even when life feels heavy and uncertain, we trust that your promises are true and your love never fails. Help us find joy in all circumstances, to lean into the strength of biblical community, and to be present for one another as reflections of your grace. Strengthen our hearts to endure, and remind us daily that you have overcome the world.
