Devotional | Ben Edison | May 12, 2020
Sometimes I think to myself: what is the point of church? What is the point of my job at church? What is the point of my work outside of church? I have so many questions in relation to finding purpose in life.
I don’t think anyone wants to live–or even feel like they are living– a purposeless life. But, how do we know when we are living and working a purpose-filled life?
I believe the verse, 1 Samuel 16:7, can help us encourage us in what we are doing and that it matters: “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”
It is hard to prove the point that technology, media, connections, photography, accounting, or really any job in or out of a church can have much of a kingdom impact, but I have always liked the thought that something I am doing matters! I feel I’m making an impact.
When I read 1 Samuel 16:7, it gives me peace. I know as long as I am doing things out of a heart of worship, honor, and love, I am serving the kingdom and living a life of purpose.
Working in media technology for the church, I feel like I am asked these questions a lot by other people both inside and outside the church. I have found that looking for a straightforward, descriptive answer in the Bible is hard to find, but finding answers about the way you do anything in life is what God points toward in the Bible. It is all about your servant heart, humble heart, and your heart of love for others.
Lord,
Thank you for your love and your answers. Please help us live our life in a way that reflects your heart. Help us learn to be humble in our gifting and find purpose in what you have given us here on earth.
Amen.
