What Are You Worried About?

What Are You Worried About?

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?"

Matthew 6:25-30

DEVOTION

The summer before I started college, I remember very clearly sitting on top of a houseboat during our family vacation with a big decision to make. Do I stay in California where things are comfortable and known, or do I move to Kansas where I feel the Lord leading me? Why would anyone leave California for Kansas?! I know, I know—I thought the same thing.

And so I began the negotiation process with God. Have you been there before? The back-and-forth of trying to convince him you know what is best for your life. I couldn’t move to Kansas. I did not even own a winter coat!

God gently reminded me that afternoon from his Word that he wanted to turn my worry to his peace.

In Matthew 6:25-30, Jesus tells us not to worry three different times. In my case, my worries about not having proper clothing seemed almost laughable. I was letting my worries take root in my life instead of turning to him in faith. I was letting potential difficulties and concerns outweigh my trust in him.

He has proven time and time again he cares about the little details of our lives. He reminds us he takes care of the birds of the air and the flowers or the field, and we are more valuable than them. We have no reason to doubt we can trust in his faithfulness.=

What are you worried about that you need to release to Jesus and experience his peace in your life today?

In case you are wondering about my decision—I did move to Kansas, where I later met my husband and began our journey in ministry together. We now have three boys and are incredibly thankful to be part of such a dynamic church in OKC.

His ways are so much better than mine!

PRAYER

Jesus,

Thank you that your character is trustworthy. You are always faithful and care more about the details of our life than we can imagine. Help fill our hearts with your peace when worry tries to consume our thoughts. Remind us of your love.

Amen.
