The God Who Interrupts

The God Who Interrupts

“Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro, his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. So Moses thought, ‘I will go over and see this strange sight—why the bush does not burn up.’

When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, ‘Moses! Moses!’

And Moses said, ‘Here I am.’”

Exodus 3: 1-4 (NIV)

DEVOTION

I have been thinking a lot about what it looks like to follow God lately, and I have come to the conclusion that the majority of the time, it starts with interruption. I was reading the story of Moses in Exodus, and I love where we find him in chapter three. He has run away from Egypt after murdering someone, and he is now tending the flock of his father-in-law, is married, and has a family.

I love this moment in the story because I think it is true for a lot of people in their faith journey. Maybe there is some sin or brokenness God saved you from, and now you are on the other side of it. Maybe you attend church and continue to praise the God who rescued you. You have found yourself in a similar position as Moses: comfortable and content.

But, if we learn anything from this moment, it is this: God isn’t finished with us. God interrupted Moses in the moment and invited him back into the uncomfortable place that was long behind him. He interrupted Moses because he heard the cries of his people in Egypt and decided to do something about it.

God decided to include and invite Moses into his rescue plan for his people and, after much back-and-forth, Moses decided to join in on what God had planned.

When was the last time God interrupted your life? If it has been a while, then maybe a better question is: Are you paying attention to him?

I believe there are still burning bushes all around us, and they often look too inconvenient for us to go to.

My hope and prayer for us in this season is that we would be people who are happily interrupted by God because it means he is up to something!

PRAYER

Heavenly Father,

We ask that you would interrupt our lives and invite us into your plans for us. Help us not only know you as Savior, but as Lord and friend. Guide us to the places you are calling us to, even if they are inconvenient. Help us continue to build your kingdom and not our own.

Amen.
