SCRIPTURE

After the crowds dispersed, Jesus went up into the hills to pray. And as night fell he was there praying alone with God. - Matthew 14:23 TPT

PRAYER

Dear Jesus,

Thank you for modeling “retreating” prayer. So often you took yourself away from the crowd to seek solitude to be with the Father. This particular time, you had just miraculously fed well over 5,000 people with a boy’s lunch. You fed them spiritually and physically, and it must have drained you spiritually and physically. Time alone with the Father fed you, nourished your soul, energized your Spirit, strengthened your body, and restored your faith. God, I want to retreat with you, to pull away from distractions, and spend extended time with you. Help me break the attraction of everything that crowds my life and make the time for solitude, to be refreshed and renewed. I hunger for you, and only time with you can satisfy me. You are my Portion, you are all I need.

Amen.

JOURNAL REFLECTION

How often do you withdraw to spend time with God? What is the average time you spend in prayer when you do? Would it surprise you to know in this particular scriptural reference in Matthew, Jesus most likely spent six hours alone with God? Does that sound wonderful to you or cause you anxiety?

CALL TO ACTION

As we begin the last week of our daily Just as He Said prayers, take time in solitude to reflect on these past weeks and how your spiritual life has changed. How has God used this time to challenge you, help you grow, and help you connect with him and others in your life? Today, consider what crowds out your time with God, and carve out time in your day to pray, be still, and be alone with God for a while.
