SCRIPTURE

He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever. - Revelation 21:4 NLT

PRAYER

Heavenly Father,

I look forward to the day when there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. Until then, Lord, comfort those who are grieving loss. Catch their tears, keeping track of each one, and hold their trembling souls in your arms of peace. Whisper words that soothe and assure. Give the gift of empathy to those surrounding the mourning; those to cry with them, hold them, sit with them, and know when to give solitude for time to heal. Lord, I know death of a loved one is not something to get over, but rather to live through. Give us your strength to cherish memories, while making new ones as we rise to meet the life you have planned for us since the foundation of the earth.

Amen.

JOURNAL REFLECTION

While there is no way to eliminate the pain of losing a loved one to death, God will comfort those in pain. How have you experienced this in your own life? How can you be part of the comfort for others? What does it mean to you that the one you have lost to death is experiencing the promise of this verse already?

CALL TO ACTION

We know the grieving process is not a succinct or linear one, and being a follower of Christ doesn’t make us immune to the pain and suffering on this earth. Today’s prayer causes us to think about the comfort available to us through relying on God, trusting his will, and understanding the promise of eternal life made possible through Jesus’ sacrifice–both for our loved ones and for us. As you reflect on today’s prayer, share a prayer request with us about anything that is weighing on your heart today.
