SCRIPTURE

God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. - 2 Corinthians 1:3b-4

PRAYER

Merciful God,

You are Jehovah Nacham, the God who comforts. You know the extent of my troubles even before I do, and you are the source of true comfort. I know this deep in my heart, yet I still try to soothe my pain and settle my anxiety with other, temporary fixes. Forgive me for the times I’ve searched for other ways to ease my suffering. Father, quiet my fears, meet my troubles with your tender mercy, and comfort me in times of despair. I know there are so many others who need to know you and experience your love and care. Show me who I can come alongside in trying times, so that I can comfort them with the same comfort you give me.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.

JOURNAL REFLECTION

What temporary fixes do you turn to in trying times? How do they usually come up short? What does God’s mercy and comfort bring to your suffering, and how does that meet your deeper need?

CALL TO ACTION

In this unprecedented time, we are all seeking comfort to help soften the sharp suffering and anxiety we feel. We order dinner from our favorite restaurants, we snuggle up with our pets and family members, we turn to mindless games and movies—all of these things offer us temporary comfort when we are struggling. But only God can offer us true comfort and boundless peace; only he can release us from the grip of anxiety and fear. Today, pray and thank God for his provision in your life, and share with him any struggles you’re experiencing.
