Encounter: Disciples (Simon Peter, Andrew, James, and John)

Scripture: Matthew 4:18-22 NASB

Now as Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who was called Peter, and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of people.” Immediately they left their nets and followed him. Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets; and he called them. Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed him.

Prayer:

Jesus,

How do you recognize those who will follow you completely and willingly? Would I measure up to your call of the first disciples? My heart wants to believe that I would drop everything and follow in lockstep with you, but I live in the tension of knowing some of my life is tied to this world—maybe more than I want to admit. As I continue on this journey of Lent, loosen my grip on what holds me back and strengthen my grasp on the promise that propels me closer to you, knowing my life will have greater purpose when I’m fully committed to you.

In your name,

Amen.
