DAY 40

DAY 40

SCRIPTURE

As evening approached, Joseph, a rich man from Arimathea who had become a follower of Jesus, went to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. And Pilate issued an order to release it to him. Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a long sheet of clean linen cloth. He placed it in his own new tomb, which had been carved out of the rock. Then he rolled a great stone across the entrance and left. Both Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting across from the tomb and watching. - Matthew 27:57-61

PRAYER

Dear God,

This day is the waiting day, the day where hope was placed in a tomb and a stone placed in front of it to keep it locked inside. Some had left you before the crucifixion, some at the cross, some after the burial, and a couple faithful remained close by—but all believed hope was lost. I’ve known those times Lord, where I’m stuck in the midst of waiting, when I want to believe hope is alive and right around the corner, but you seem silent. I have the great privilege of knowing you didn’t leave your followers in this story waiting for long, Let this be my reminder during my days of stillness and waiting. You will rise victorious. Easter is coming!

In the name of hope I pray,

Amen.

JOURNAL REFLECTION

Place yourself in this recounting of the burial of Jesus. What are you thinking as you place Jesus in the tomb and roll the stone in front of the entrance? What about leaving the tomb? Or would you stay and watch? What have times of waiting and feeling God’s silence been like for you? Do you know anyone sitting and waiting for hope to make an appearance? How can you be the voice of hope to them?

CALL TO ACTION

As we prepare to celebrate Easter Sunday and Jesus’ victory over the grave, reflect on today’s prayer. How many times—even recently—have you felt hope was lost? How many times have you cried out to God and wondered if he’s heard you? Today, take time to sit still and listen to the worship song, “For the Cross.” Think about its meaning and hold onto the eternal hope you have through Jesus alone.
