SCRIPTURE

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. - Matthew 11:28-30 NIV

PRAYER

Dear Jesus,

Yesterday, the world celebrated the miracle of your resurrection, the promise of new life—eternal life—by you fulfilling everything just as you said. Today, I come to you weary and burdened, not believing less in your promises, but rather claiming them, clinging to them, and praying through them. I can choose to sink into the disorienting uncertainty of my circumstances or yoke myself to you. I choose your easy yoke. Let me find rest in you. I pray your promised rest consumes my weary soul—the seat of my feelings, desires, affections, and aversions. If I begin to wander back to the wearying ways I’m prone to, forgive me and lead me back to your yoke where I can settle into rest once more.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.

JOURNAL REFLECTION

Reread today’s Scripture, but before you do, consider the words “just as he said.” You can trust Jesus because he fulfills his promises. How does he give you rest today? What tangible reminder can you use to direct you back to these verses? For example, maybe you can use the icon for your favorite social media app, the on/off button for your TV remote, the handle to your refrigerator, or something else that’s a precursor to what you are tempted to turn to when weary and in need of rest. Don’t accept temporary, substitute rest; choose the yoke of Jesus.

CALL TO ACTION

There is no denying how different our world is today compared to a few weeks ago. Our lives have changed in every way imaginable, and with that turmoil, we can experience fear, anxiety, worry, and stress. As we remain isolated to protect those who are caring for us and those we love, slow down. Pare down distractions. Focus your heart on Jesus’ promises and allow his faithfulness, grace, and peace to rule in your life today. We invite you to share a prayer request with us; we would be honored to pray for you.
