Pastor’s Pick: PJ Flores

This August, don’t forget to pick up a copy of Samson and the Pirate Monks by Nate Larkin. Men, this one is especially for you — author Nate Larkin leverages honesty and adept storytelling to share a refreshing perspective on Samson’s story.

Pastor P.J. Flores can’t get enough of this book:
Samson and the Pirate Monks blew me away. Nate Larkin is the real deal! I was so intrigued by Nate’s story, I actually reached out to him and had a lengthy conversation about what it truly means to be surrounded by authentic brotherhood. Nate introduces a model of community and friendship that is energizing men’s ministry across the country.

This is a book that does not attempt to shame or guilt Christians into ‘being better,’ but instead talks about real issues, real connections, and how to give and receive real support. The book lays out a practical blueprint for male Christian fellowship that is simple in its design, yet powerful in its execution. I highly suggest this book to anyone who feels like their faith has gotten shallow, or for anyone struggling with un-Godly addictions of any kind.”

As we kick off our fall season at Crossings, don’t forget to come to the Crossings Bookstore and pick up your copy of Here Am I, Lord…Send Somebody Else by Jill Briscoe. This Pastor’s Pick book is a great book that encourages its readers to leave their uncertainty behind and step into confidence in Christ.

Thanks to the “IF Gathering” conferences in 2017, a whole new generation of women became familiar with the writings of Jill Briscoe. An octogenarian who continues to write and speak, Jill began her ministry doing street evangelism in her native England. Soon she was disciplining young women, teaching, and raising a family. When her husband Stuart accepted the senior pastorate of Elmbrook Church in the suburbs of Milwaukee, Jill’s ministry took on an international role.

“When I served as a pastor at Elmbrook,” Executive Pastor of Ministries, Bill Search said, “I had the privilege of getting to know Stuart and Jill Briscoe personally. They are faithful, dedicated servants who love God passionately and continue to serve as examples to many. Jill’s gift of writing is creative, poetic, poignant, and helps connect others to God and His Word. Here Am I, Lord…Send Somebody Else is perhaps one of Jill’s finest works. Keep an eye out – Jill plans to be at Crossings in early 2019!”

Bill recommends this book for all those who need a boost in their faith and spiritual confidence this fall. Looking for some more recommendations? Check out all of our Pastor’s Picks right here, or come visit the Bookstore for recommendations tailored to your interests.

This July, be sure to pick up a copy of The Path Between Us: An Enneagram Journey to Healthy Relationships by Suzanne Stabile in the Crossings Bookstore. The book explores many different personality types and what makes each of them tick, how each type acts in personal, professional, and romantic relationships, and more, all through the Enneagram framework.

Sandi Patty-Peslis, Artist-in-Residence at Crossings, can’t recommend this book enough:

“I’ve always loved exploring the deeper levels of personality. It helps so much in understanding not only ourselves, but one another, and most importantly, understanding how God uniquely made each of us. An Enneagram is an excellent tool on our journey of spiritual and relational growth.” -Sandi Patty-Peslis

The Myth of Balance by Frank Bealer

Anyone in ministry can attest to the fact of the challenges we face trying to balance our ministries, our work, and life in general. Author Frank Bealer takes on this challenge and gives us a model to help prioritize and establish realistic expectations. Frank speaks from the heart as one who has served in ministry and is committed to his family. This book is for ANYONE trying to tame the “mythical beast of balance” in life, family, work and/or ministry.

Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy by Eric Metaxas

Any in depth biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer is going to be humbling and inspiring, but this one by Eric Metaxas is the gold standard in my opinion. Metaxas not only tells the story of this hero of the faith, but he also incorporates a lot of Bonhoeffer’s theology, journals, and romantic letters written from his concentration camp. It amplifies this theologian’s words in ways that they would not be otherwise. If one reads this biography, and then rereads Bonhoeffer’s classic, The Cost of Discipleship, it brings much more weight to his works as one realizes the extent that this pastor, martyr, prophet, and spy actually lived out his words.

Knowing God by J. I. Packer

This is a great book to help people better understand the nature of God, who He is, and who we are in relation to Him. This book was influential in my understanding of my own faith. Not only was the book helpful, more importantly, it encouraged me to develop a deeper habit of daily bible study. I spent countless hours with my pastor walking through this book and the lessons I learned are a major reason that I am working at Crossings today. Packer is a brilliant theologian, and although you may not agree with 100% of his positions, the way that he presents this information is insightful, well reasoned, and based on strict biblical discipline.

The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis

This book is a great allegory about a busload of tourists from hell who take a tour of Heaven with the opportunity to stay if they would only surrender their lives to God. It’s an easy read that incorporates much of Lewis’s theology, his views on God’s grace, and the idea of surrender. It’s also a powerful mirror, as we see glimpses of ourselves in many of the tourists’ excuses as to why we hold back portions of our lives from full surrender to God.
