“Follow me.” -Jesus
Once Christmas has come and gone, it is time to consider the coming year. Allow me to submit a New Year’s Resolution for your consideration. Follow Christ. Don’t settle for loving him, adoring him, worshiping him, even learning about him in Bible Study. Follow Him. There are many people who profess Christ, but they don’t follow Christ. They believe in him, and have said a prayer of confession and asked him to forgive their sins. They are Christians – but they aren’t Christ followers. They worship Christ, admire him, and probably really love him, but they don’t follow him. For me, following is not easy because it means that, though I’m pretty sure of my destination, I have no idea what route we will take to get there. Following means that I’m not in charge of direction, pit stops, or speed of travel. Followers do just that – follow the Leader, trust his decisions, knowing that he knows the entire journey, and can be trusted to safely deliver me. I’m fairly certain that by about March 1st I’ll be whining, “Are we there yet?” – but I’m resolving now to keep the Master in view, and to seek the rhythm of his steps, so that I may arrive at the end of this year with a deeper familiarity with the Master, and of the grace that will finally lead me home.
Respond: Spiritual Exercise for week of December 22, 2013
Take a blank piece of paper and draw two intersecting lines on it, creating four roughly equal quadrants. Label each quadrant; Heart, Soul, Mind and Body. In each quadrant, consider one or two practical exercises you can incorporate to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength (or body).” What does it look like to follow Jesus with your whole life?
