Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy by Eric Metaxas

Any in depth biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer is going to be humbling and inspiring, but this one by Eric Metaxas is the gold standard in my opinion. Metaxas not only tells the story of this hero of the faith, but he also incorporates a lot of Bonhoeffer’s theology, journals, and romantic letters written from his concentration camp. It amplifies this theologian’s words in ways that they would not be otherwise. If one reads this biography, and then rereads Bonhoeffer’s classic, The Cost of Discipleship, it brings much more weight to his works as one realizes the extent that this pastor, martyr, prophet, and spy actually lived out his words.
