When you first meet Executive Director, Lyn Watson, it’s immediately clear why she oversees all Crossings Human Resources functions. Her warm, vivacious personality, extensive experience, and passion for helping others succeed make her the perfect person to encourage and challenge the Crossings staff.
Born in Durham, North Carolina, Lyn and her family moved to Lawton, Oklahoma following the completion of her dad’s seminary education at Duke. She has been in Oklahoma most of her life and attended college at the University of Oklahoma where she originally began training to become a dentist. “I wanted to be a dentist…until I took chemistry!” she joked. She calls Lawton her home town and has laughed about God’s sense of humor in how the Watson family came to Crossings.
Lyn first found Crossings when her daughter, Emily–who was just ten years old at the time–announced to the family: “our [current] church doesn’t teach the Bible, so I’m going to Crossings.” Lyn and her husband, Brad, along with their children, Emily and Ben, soon gave Crossings a try. “I love God’s sense of humor,” she said. “We’re still here 14 years later!” Lyn has been involved at Crossings in a variety of ministries and as a volunteer prior to joining the staff. One of her favorite aspects of the church is Crossings Students 912 ministry where she’s currently a Small Group leader.
Her natural leadership prowess has been evident since she began her career at DataTimes, an Oklahoma company which provided access to information before the Internet was born. Later in her career, Lyn began consulting and has owned her own businesses. Prior to coming to Crossings, she worked for a leadership company where she averaged an impressive 100 days of training per year.
While her past esteemed career opportunities have been highlights in her life, Lyn believes God is doing very important work through her right now. “God is showing me that his plan is the best plan. Everything I’ve experienced has prepared me for such a time as this.”
Lyn’s life experiences have included incredible highs: she has been married to her husband for 28 years; she saw her daughter, Emily, get married and begin her life in Tulsa; she has seen her son, Ben, prepare for graduate school following his collegiate career at OSU; she traveled extensively throughout the United States in her career; she received her SHRM-SCP (Society for Human Resource Management – Senior Certified Professional) certification in 2017. She has also experienced some very difficult lows, including being diagnosed with, battling, and beating breast cancer. Her roles as wife, mother, businesswoman, cancer survivor, leader, and volunteer have contributed to her unique calling to prepare the next generation of leaders at Crossings.
Lyn’s role as Executive Director focuses on three primary areas: staff development, career pathing, and culture.
“God is leading me to provide the Crossings staff the tools needed to grow themselves and others,” Lyn said. “One crucial goal I have for our staff is for every employee to feel valued, have a voice, and be heard.”
Lyn’s passions for professional and personal development, her adept ability to connect others, her fun-loving personality, her servant-heartedness, and her astounding drive exemplify the DNA of Crossings and we are fortunate to have her in this new role in 2019.
