So Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.

Hebrews 9:28

I will never forget a cold January morning in 1975 when my second-grade class and I returned from Christmas break, deflated and feeling like we’d been slobber-knocked. Our magical holiday had ended, and when the morning bell pounded, I just wanted to put down my head and cry.

Two weeks prior, we had fled the classroom for our homes where carols, eggnog, presents, and family awaited. Our little minds could not grasp how such joy could ever end.

Then January showed up.

You can probably recall similar letdowns and have learned to accept the fact that everything you look forward to in this broken world–a weekend, a vacation, a reunion, another Christmas break–eventually ends.

If Christ is our greatest treasure, though, we really do have something to look forward to. It’s something more wonderful, magical, and lasting than even the best Christmas: one day he will return to gather those “eagerly waiting for him” and open the door to joy with no end!

Until then, we can still hanker for the weekend, the next holiday, or long summer days as long as we remember that only Christ and his glory can bear the weight of our deepest yearnings.

Do you long for Christ above all else? Do you hunger for the eternal satisfaction he has in store?

Are you “eagerly waiting for him?”
