When Crossings Edmond opened its doors for the first time on November 6, 2016, over 1,250 people attended and prayed for God to move in mighty ways in this new community. Nearly three years later, Crossings Edmond has experienced tremendous growth, including its recent expansion to add 8,500 square feet for KIDS and Students.

Read on to hear from Crossings Edmond member and avid volunteer, Doug Burleson, on how being involved has impacted him.

Go out into the country lanes and behind the hedges and urge anyone you find to come, so that my house will be full. Luke 14:23

Crossings Edmond is such an incredible place. It’s inspiring, full of grace, and a place that makes me so grateful.

I have such gratitude for Crossings–the leadership, the church, the volunteers, the people who call it home. I’m thankful for a church that continues to go beyond their comfort zones and expand into new opportunities. That is not an easy thing to do. I thank God for the chance to seek out opportunities where we can be used and have an impact rather than just sitting back and getting comfortable where we are.

The book of James comes to mind whenever I think about volunteering: “faith without works is dead.” This doesn’t mean we do good things to get to heaven, but, I believe, it means if I claim to be a follower of Jesus, the overflow of following him is to help those in need. When I see an opportunity to serve others, I try to do that as often as I can.

We can never discount any small act of serving, because every act can impact someone. Even if the opportunity is outside my comfort zone, I always want to help, because it’s a chance to demonstrate God’s love.

Being known by love means being both “proactive” and “reactive.” In reactively being known by love, we can show God’s love to someone who is dealing with tragedy or a challenging situation. In proactively being known by love, we seek others out–someone who may not know God’s love, for example, or a new community–and help others experience Christ’s love every way we can.
