I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.

ADVENT DEVOTION – DECEMBER 1

Advent, or the highly anticipated arrival of Jesus, is that moment in time when hope entered a world of darkness and despair. In a time of bleakest outlook, where injustice reigned and oppression was spreading like a plague, hope was born.

But hope in what exactly?

First, hope for what is in our past. Jesus came to forgive, heal the wounds and failures of our past, and reconcile us to a good and holy God. Because of the birth–and later, the death of Jesus–our relationship with God is made new. Nothing is too shameful to forgive, and nothing is too painful to restore. All our past experiences, good and bad, are used for the good of those who love God and put their hope in Jesus.

Second, we can live in the present with unwavering confidence in a living God who will not leave or forsake us. Jesus is Emmanuel, or “God with us.” He pursued us to the point of leaving the comforts of heaven, putting on human flesh, and living amidst worldly temptations and deceptions. He faced evil and overcame it. And, he remains with us, abiding and active, strengthening and guiding us, until we are delivered safely to our heavenly home. Not only is he with us, but we can rest knowing life’s circumstances will not knock Jesus off the throne.

He is unshakeable. He is faithful. He is our steadfast hope for today.

Finally, we have assurance of a future. God has promised an eternity for his children. He has promised a home so wonderful, so far beyond our imaginations, we cannot begin to understand the presence that will be his full glory, resplendent in light and drenched in hope.

All because of Jesus.

Jesus not only came to bring hope; he is our hope.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father,

Thank you for the gift of your Son. Give us unwavering faith as we entrust our lives to your care, believing with every fiber of our being our hope is in Jesus alone.

Amen.
